Mottola is not the gatekeeper of Michael Jackson's music. Branca is.
That is the conclusion I have reached.
Mottola can make all the public claims he wants, but ultimately, anyone and everyone MUST go through Michael Jackson's Estate in order to have legal permission to use his music, his image and/or his likeness for marketing and merchandising purposes.
And who runs and controls the Estate?
John Branca and his parter, John McClain.
The key head honcho is Branca. He is the person who has the power, the industry experience, the music industry connections and is considered one of the finest music and/or entertainment industry attorney's in the United States.
So, unless Mottola is The Puppet Master who's pulling Branca's 'strings,' John Branca - with Michael's 2002 Will in hand, and named specifically in that document - is the Gatekeeper of Michael's music.
You don't get to use Michael Jackson's music without going through John Branca first.
That's the bottom line, and the bottom line is all that matters in the end. Mottola got media face time and may well be using his connections and power with or over Branca, but as far as I'm concerned, it's John Branca who is the Gatekeeper of Michael's music.
And that Gatekeeper is extremely knowledgeable, powerful, experienced and well connected. He's one of the best in the business.
It would seem when the Today Show referred to Mr. Mottola as the "Gatekeeper" they knew what they were saying or perhaps were prompted to say. We don't really know if the Today Show contacted Mottola or Mottola's publicity people contacted the Today Show, but either way the Sony message was clearly made.
Yes I believe they did. I think they were instructed to use that specific term. And yes I agree, Sony did make their message clear.

edited to add: I believe it was Sony who put Mottola out there to make a statement. To my eye he looks uncomfortable in that interview. I believe he did not really want to be there at that point in time.

just wanted to also bring this to our attention again. AND PLEASE this is only to keep the focus on the facts.
I could not yet get through all of it but these articles, posted on 10/6/10 came straight to my attention: "Jacko gets tough...." from 7/8/2002 "Jacko may claim "threats" by Mottola " from 7/12/2002 "Jacko will get his albums back after all" from 7/19/2002.
Please notice the parallels in some articles with that what Eddie Jones mentioned about the( non) promotion of Michael´s "Invincible" album starting at about 2:12 in the video of the ´August 23´ thread. Interesting is the article about Michael having back his masters in - as we now now - 2009 and what Dieter Wiesner told in his interview about how and under which threats and pressure Michael was made to do these concerts (Dieter Wiesner interview starting at about 11:13).
I was searching for another thread and came across this one. I wanted to bring it back to our attention as there is the present topic of $ony allegedly having been hacked. I am sure that there is a lot that the MSM would not tell us and why the reports are presented the way they are. What do they hide?
Thank you Irina again for your amazing research and putting all pieces of information together for all of us!
