Spreckels One Year Later: Those Left Behind Contend With Their Losses

The families at the center of the Spreckels case have followed very different paths in the wake of the tragedies, one private, the other very public.

 

For all the focus on the sensational nature of the deaths associated with the Spreckels mansion – the circumstances, the timing, the people involved – Rebecca Zahau and Max Shacknai left loved ones who are still grieving today, long after the television cameras have come and gone.

Zahau's family members, who are based in Missouri and Germany, refuse to believe the conclusion that she committed suicide and are fighting to have the case re-opened. 

Max's family appears split: His father, Arizona pharmaceuticals mogul Jonah Shacknai,accepted the findings by the San Diego County Sheriffs Department and the Coronado Police Department in both cases, but mother Dina Shacknai successfully sued the county four months ago to obtain photos taken during the boy's autopsy.
