Haunted by the day an inn spectre called
Roundhay Park

Roundhay Park

EVER seen a giant snarling dog stalking the shadows of Roundhay Park in Leeds, or the ghost of a drunken canal worker wandering the alleyways of Huddersfield?
If so, then you're far from alone.

In his new book, Hauntings in Yorkshire, Leeds author Stephen Wade brings together the supernatural tales of ordinary Yorkshire people who have had extraordinary experiences.

Jason Gibson, former manager of the Station Hotel in Knaresborough, tells of an old soldier who haunted the hotel's Blue Room.

Not content with tapping the floors and walking along the landing, the ghost used to tamper with the fuse box and make the jukebox play tunes that weren't on its system – most frequently Black Sabbath's Paranoid.

Another pub with more than its fair share of ghostly goings on is the Ye Olde English Gentleman in Hull. Staff at the watering hole, close to the Hull New Theatre, claim to have frequently seen objects flying from tabletops onto the floor.

Football fans in Huddersfield would do well to watch out for Old Joe, a former canal worker who is said to have plunged
into the water opposite the Gas Works Club near the McAlpine stadium.

Many people have reported hearing a man humming late at night when the pubs are closing and others have seen a shadowy figure entering the water but never making a splash – a re-enactment of the old man's death.

As well as your common-and-garden ghost, the book also singles out more malevolent spirits such as the guytrash and boggart.

The Yorkshire definition of "boggart" denotes a spirit which moves from place to place, often something that looks human from a distance and grotesque when you meet it face-to-face.

And that's something one neighbourhood in north Leeds can vouch for.

On the Seacroft estate there is a Boggart Hill Drive, surrounded by a cluster of Boggart Hill streets, which played host to a series of uncanny events in the 1960s.

One man says that, on the way home from work one night, he and his friend decided to race to the bus stop.

He sped ahead but then decided to stop, turn and look for his friend.

He says: "I turned and saw this shape coming towards me. It was like a man, bent forward, hands in pockets so I thought, but then as it came near I saw that its face was half pig and half man."

A woman who lived in the area at the same time says she saw the boggart while out early one morning.

She recalled: "It was bitter cold. I was wrapped up, a scarf around my head and a big coat.

"I sort of squinted to look ahead, it was so cold. I could see my breath in front of me. Then I could also see something else.

"I saw this thing. It reminded me of that film, the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I mean it was an ugly face.

"He looked at me – well it looked, I can't say it was a man – as if it hated me. Then it made this unearthly noise like a thing in pain, and turned aside to walk into a garden."

The guytrash, meanwhile, is said to prowl Yorkshire's parks and moors, with the Dales around Sedbergh being a particular 'hotspot'. Also referred to as Black Shuck or the barghest, the guytrash looks like a large black dog - some say the size of a pony - which appears to scare unsuspecting walkers.

Mr Wade writes: "The Roundhay or Oakwood guytrash is black, dull-coated and as big as a donkey. His eyes are reputedly red and he is said to appear when a person is so troubled that he comes to shadow their foreboding of decline. If you see him then it is a warning to rethink, to gather your reason."

As well as the testimonies of everyday people, Hauntings in Yorkshire also includes the county's most infamous ghost stories, such as the hauntings of Scarborough Castle (by a headless entity) and Armley jail, Leeds.

The book is available now, at £8.99, from stockists by quoting ISBN number 9781841146973 or direct from the publishers, Halsgrove, on 01823653777.
