We were touring the Whaley House last summer when we noticed a curtain moving very slowly forward and back in an upstairs bedroom closet. The curtain was not rippling as if blown by a breeze, but was moving in a stiff and rigid manner. At first we thought it was a staged "occurence" for the benefit of the tourist visitors. But the more we watched it, the stranger the movement appeared. Has anyone else ever reported such movement of this closet curtain? The windows were closed and the doorway to the bedroom was closed with glass. There was no apparent breeze anywhere.

Yes, this has been reported many times. The curtain is actually covering a passway between two rooms. The other room has been blocked off since the theatre was put into the house recently. The blocked off room was the master bedroom. There are no tricks staged for tourist. WYSIWYG One person reported seeing the little girl spirit Marion Reynolds hiding behind the curtain. They claim to have seen her shoes sticking out from underneath the curtain. Thanks for the great question. Bonnie Vent San Diego Paranormal Research Project

I would like to say I was with my husband last year August 2003 when we did the Ghosts and Graveyard tour. We went back the following day to the Whaley house and experienced the same red curtain blowing. We were intrigued since it was in the middle of the upstairs not near any windows between the big bedroom and the theater. We werent sure if what we were seeing was real but after reading the posting we know for sure. If anyone else has any feedback let me know. I will be going again this Saturday and taking more pictures. I will keep everyone updated. In my last visit I had lots of pics with orbs and the same ghost person in the dining room of the whaley house... Also a ghost woman appearing in the room before the courthouse room that appears next to children.

My mother, sister and I took the Ghosts and Gravestones tour on May 21, 2005. We entered the Whaley house at about 9:00-9:30 p.m. The air in the Whaley house was stifling. Upstairs in the the master bedroom, we too saw the curtain moving in a bizarre manner. At first we thought it was a fan in the passway between the master bedroom and theater. When we asked the docents, they said that there was NOT a fan blowing up there and that people had reported that curtain moving before. It moved as if someone had a hold of it. It would come to a complete stop and then move 12+ inches in either direction. My mother was really scared and went downstairs immediately. I have a picture I took of the theater and what looks like a face looking in from the window. I will send it just as soon as I found out where.

I'm about to just post my story from when I went to the house and I'm actually surprised to hear other stories about the curtain moving. I'm just curious- has anyone ever reported something trying to pull them back into the room after seeing the curtains move? Edit: Is there supposed to be lighting behind the curtain?

Hi Ms. S. People have reported being touched in the upstairs area. It has happened to me as well. I was standing outside of the nursery when my friend was tapped on the back of the head. This spirit was male and a bit of a prankster. I am clairaudient so I heard him say "I am right behind you". I turned and moved at the same time my friend was hit on the head. Since I was no longer standing beside him he knew that I did not hit him and there was no one else around at the time. Not visibly anyway! It was meant by the spirit to be fun not scary. I believe they are using the area behind the stage for a dressing area for the docents. The room you are referring to and the backstage area have a pass-thru which is where the moving curtain is located. There is most likely a light there but you would need to ask a docent to know for sure. The current backstage area was prior to 2001 the Whaley's Master Bedroom. I have always considered the room you are referring to as Violet bedroom. Back in the day, bedrooms did shift around depending on what areas Thomas had rented out so it would be difficult for them to lay claim to a particular bedroom. Thanks for the post! Hey guys, I visited the Whaley House on August 12, 2005 on a Ghosts and Gravestones tour. I did see the curtain move in one of the upstairs bedroom. I asked one of the volunteers and he said that that was their dressing room and that there was someone back there. He never mentioned anything about any hauntings involving the curtain. Aolanis

I saw a little orb floating from that curtain behind past the mirror and dissapeared. And this happened in broad daylight.

When I first moved to San Diego, the Whaley House was one of the first things I wanted to see. When I was upstairs, the room to the right had a curtain across the door and yes that curtain was moving. And just like what an other poster stated, it was not moving as if there was a breeze, but as if someone was behind the curtain.

There were four of us females touring the Whaley house last summer. We all saw the curtain moving in a strange matter. Later, in the same room, my daughter took out her phone and made a recording of what was in there. She was hoping for a voice imprint... however, what we saw instead on the tape is a "shadow" of a woman in victorian clothing as well as a voice. She said, "hello" and "no" in response to my daughter talking to her. She was next to the fireplace in that upstairs bedroom.

"Victor" may or may not have told you the truth. He may have his own reasons to deny there's anything paranormal about the curtain, or the house, for that matter. I visited the house 3 times in one day about 2 years ago. The curtain was moving just a little. When I went back in the afternoon a lady was almost at the top of the stairs when she shrieked that "something" had just touched her head. She and her husband and son stood next to me looking in at the room with the curtain. For a couple of minutes the curtain was barely moving, but all of a sudden it rose stiffly out, about 1 1/2 feet or more. It did it several times. There wasn't anyone behind the curtain, nor was there a wind or breeze blowing that day. This freaked us all out. I went back at 11:00 p.m. and the curtain was again just barely moving.
