Is Sage College haunted?

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Is Sage College in Albany ground zero for things that go bump in the night?

"If there are spirits here, they are surely very benign spirits," said Sage College Dean Kevin Stoner.

The stories surrounding the alleged haunting are mysterious, intriguing and sad. According to the website theshadowlands.net, which keeps an updated list of haunted locations across the country, the campus is haunted by the ghosts of orphans who died in a basement fire.

"We can't confirm that and never have been able to," said Stoner. "We don't know a lot about the history, but we do know that over time, many, many, many children stayed here."

The college's oldest buildings date back to the turn of the 20th century, when, for more than 50 years, they were part of the Albany Home for Children - an orphanage. To further back up the fire story, some claim that shallow graves were discovered during some recent construction on campus.

Is Sage College haunted?

As we inch ever closer to Halloween, we're investigating area locations that some people say are haunted. One site believed to be haunted by the ghosts of young children is the Sage College campus in Albany. Our Ryan Peterson checked it out and learned that sometimes the truth doesn't always live up to the hype.

"The truth of that is," explained Stoner, "when excavation was done on an adjacent property, they uncovered a potter's field where the poor of Albany had been buried for quite some time."

Stoner has been at Sage for nearly 20 years. In that time, he's heard all kinds of stories and said there's usually a logical explanation for them all -- or maybe not.

"For every light someone's sure they turned off but now it's on and vice versa, there's a perfectly natural explanation and a more interesting one," said Stoner.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there's no doubt you've felt the hairs on the back of your neck stand up whenever the wind slams a door shut or lights flicker for no apparent reason. As Dean Stoner said, it's as haunted as you make it.
