TV's Most Haunted doctor set to investigate former Denbigh asylum

A MOST Haunted expert is in good spirits for the seven-day investigation of a North Wales landmark.

Dr Ciarán O'Keeffe is a parapsychologist on the popular Living TV show and the soft-spoken voice of reason is excited by the team's visit to the historic North Wales Hospital in Denbigh.

Asked if he was looking forward to the event, Dr O'Keeffe said: "Absolutely, this is extra special in terms of the length (seven nights) and it's only fair to do justice to the place."

The closest study with regards to the sheer scale of the site was in Eastern State Penitentiary in America and he added: "I think even that, you're only still talking about a third of the size."

Dr O'Keeffe is expecting a "really spectacular" event.

"The mediums have the idea that they want to go in there cold," said Dr O'Keeffe, who won't be on the investigation, but will carry out research on the site.

Dr O'Keeffe is seen as the Most Haunted 'voice of reason' and he joked: "People normally call me the party pooper!

"If anybody has an experience I'm the one who will give an alternative explanation."

He joined Most Haunted during series three in 2003.

As a parapsychologist, it's Dr O'Keeffe's role to evaluate all aspects of an investigation.

Using a wide range of paranormal equipment and experiments, he has to determine whether the team's experiences could have been paranormal or attributable to other factors.

He believes that people in general are too quick to believe a ghostly or paranormal explanation when they are in 'haunted' places, especially when they start with a strong paranormal belief.

Dr O'Keeffe said that in such circumstances, even a sudden gust of wind was thought of as a supernatural experience and he added: "The Most Haunted team have changed over the years, and I think they're more sceptical now."

As for the North Wales Hospital spectacular, Dr O'Keeffe said: "I expect the emotion to be negative.

"People will be quite upset and that won't be helped by anything that the medium says.

"People are going to get very upset when they think about the past.

"In addition to that, people are going to be a little... disorientated by the size of the place.

"I'm really looking forward to it as I am a doctor of psychology... and I'm also looking forward to being in that part of North Wales as well."
