Workers renovating the area behind a London pub found something they definitely weren't looking for: the remains of Shakespeare's first theater. The Curtain, which predates the more famous Globe Theatre, was opened in 1577and likely hosted the first performances of popular English class assignments "Romeo and Juliet" and "Henry V." The Curtain was home to Shakespeare's acting company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, until the Globe was opened. The location of the Curtain was lost by historians shortly after. "I love the fact that we are excavating London, and slowly clearing away the miserable piles of Victoriana and Empire," Dominic Dromgoole, the Globe's current artistic director said, "And revealing the wild, anarchic and joyous London which is lurking beneath."
