Ghost hunter issues stories plea as city loses its spirits
6/27/06

WAKEFIELD has given up the ghost, according to a paranormal
investigator.
Once thriving with old haunts, the Merrie City has now become a ghost
town at least for the undead. Thanks to regeneration, new
buildings and demolition, the city's spookiest spots have been
exorcised. So much so that Steve Jones, leader of Wakefield Pagan Moot,
is running out of spots to stop at for his Weird Wakefield walks, and
would welcome any new eerie tales to replace the old favourites. Mr
Jones said: "Pubs such as the Grove Inn, with its famous Fred the
poltergiest, have been knocked down now. So many pubs have been
demolished or turned into flats and housing, we're running out of spots.
"It would be useful if we could hear of any new ghost stories to include
on the Weird Wakefield walks, otherwise it's going to start being a very
short one.

There's no reason why scary stories have to be old or Victorian with
white ladies they can just as easily have their roots in present
day." He added he would be very interested to hear of any Wakefield
nightclubs that have spirits floating about. He said: "There always seem
to be ghosts in clubs, but never really in nightclubs. With some of the
old buildings these are housed in on Westgate, we feel sure there must
be one or two around."
