MYSTERY EXPLOSIONS IN ENGLISH COUNTRY PARK (Original headline: MORE REPORTS OF MYSTERIOUS BANGS ) 8/01/06
Reports of more terrifyingly loud explosions in the New Hall area have generated serious concern among residents. The Observer has been inundated with calls from anxious homeowners desperate to know the cause of the frightening booms erupting from the direction of New Hall Valley Country Park. Staff and visitors at New Hall Hotel are no strangers to the noise, which they have now heard three times.
An employee said: "It's happened twice this year and definitely last summer as well.
"Last week I was showing some clients round the grounds.
"I thought the hotel had exploded. It was a massive explosion, a really significant noise," he added.
"Our board of directors were here at the time and they ran outside to see what had happened.
"We would like to know what's causing the noise."
Hilda Marshall of Reddicap Hill said she was woken in the early hours of Saturday morning.
"It was like a bomb had gone off, I honestly expected to hear sirens.
"Even my husband woke up and he is a heavy sleeper.
"It was quite frightening." Frustratingly, no one is any closer to finding answers.
Tony Derbyshire, chairman of the New Hall Valley Country Park, said: "Nobody has made an official complaint.
"We are so used to hearing strange noises these days. As far as I know there is nothing going on - nothing official anyway." New Hall councillor John Beadman was equally mystified.
He said: "I have no idea what it could be. "I was at home when it happened and I didn't hear a thing - but I'm not disputing there have been bangs."
