Hello Everybody. I was so amazed by my visit to the Whaley House last night. I have to admit, I was alittle freaked out before I went in but the tour guides there were so nice and helpful that I felt comfortable by the end of my visit. When I was there I did notice some guy carrying around some ghost hunting equipment. How does one become a ghost hunter? Do you have to be psychic to become one? I just found it really interesting. The reason why I ask is because when I was by one of the kid's rooms upstairs, I started to feel really weird. The ghost hunter guy asked me if I was okay and I told him how I felt. He immediately went over and took a picture. He got some weird mist by a doll. I was absolutely scared, and weirdly, excited about the whole thing. One of the guides there was nice enough to calm me down. Does that mean anything?

Thanks in advance,
SuperCat

Hi SuperCat,

You do not have to be psychic to investigate paranormal activity. It is helpful but not necessary. It sounds like you do have some sensitivity. I do not care for the term "hunter" I like investigator as a better term.

You do need some equipment but you can start with the basics. There are people who spend thousands of dollars on equipment but here is my short list:

Digital camera - Night Shot if you have it.
Tape Recorder with a good microphone for capturing EVP
Trifield Natural EMF Meter - You can go to our Product/Services Catalog to place an order.

Always be respectful of other people and property. Some like to go into cemeteries at night which I DO NOT recommend. You can get arrested for trespassing if you do not have authorization to be there. So the caution is be careful where you choose to investigate.

Thanks for the post.

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it! Maybe if a ghost investigation group will let me join in, I could see how things go. Do you know any to recommend? About the sensitive thing, I really don't know if I'm psychic or not. I don't think anyone in my family is. But sometimes I get weird vibes about things like those dolls at the Whaley House. Or even just meeting people, shaking their hands or looking in their eyes, I feel something about them. For example, when I was at the Whaley House the ghost hunter guy I was talking to, I swear something about him made me feel angry. And I don't know why. He was really nice to talk to and he didn't say anything mean to me. Just something made me start to feel irritated about him. Would that be something or am I just imagining things? Sorry if this is getting off the subject. By the way, have you done investigating in the Whaley House (just to get back on track)?

Thanks again,
Cat

Hi Cat,

I do not have any groups that I can recommend. There used to be a meetup group but meetup started charging a fee and they discontinued the group. The rest of the groups are private.

I have a long history with the Whaley House that goes back to 1993 actively. I was born here so I have known about the house all of my life. I used to work very closely with people at the house. This is no longer the case since the change of caretakers in 2000/1. My concern is the spirits in the house and I still am trying to assist them. So I am still actively involved just at a distance. If you want more details please cut and paste this link into your browser: http://www.sdparanormal.com/board/board_topic/1254094/99286.htm

I also put out a DVD with some of the stories from: The Whaley House, Villa Montezuma and William Heath Davis House. See San Diego Paranormal DVD on the index to the left.

Thanks for the post!

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks again. You've been so helpful and informative, I really appreciate it. I read your other posting in regards to the Whaley House. I'm sure the Whaleys appreciate every bit of help you're trying to do for them. Hopefully the new caretakers realize that also. The workers that were there the night I went were talking about a lot of changes. I'm sure you get asked all the time what the Whaleys think of it. Which brings me to another question (actually a different question), do you feel other spirits are there other than the Whaleys and the Yankee Jim guy? I just thought there must be other spirits in the place that want to be heard.

Thanking you again,
-Cat

PS. I did want to ask another question if you don't mind (and if it's too personal, you don't have to). I read your bio page about how you realized you had somthing special when you were young. How old were you and how did it come about? Did you realize off the bat that you were psychic or did it take time before you realized? Sorry for asking so many questions.

Hi Cat,

I know there are other spirits at the Whaley House. I have seen soldiers and political people in the Court House. The little girl spirit seen in the dining room and outside has never identified herself. Keep in mind that most of Old Town would be considered haunted. The restaurants have also reported activity from time to time.

On the psychic question: I guess I first became aware when I was about 8 years old. Adults would come to me for advice. I thought this was sort of strange but they always seemed happy with the answers. I did not know what being psychic was so I did not think of it in those terms. It was not until I was 30 that it kicked into high gear. At that point it was impossible to ignore.

I am a very spiritual person so I guess sometimes people don't quite understand what I am trying to say. It is not black and white. Some people seem to be looking for a cookbook on how this works. I can only share my experiences and what I am told by my guides as far as the mechanics. I really feel it is different for everyone since everyone has different strengths and abilities. Like everyone else I am here to learn and grow and make a difference. Cat, if you are feeling a pull to explore this in yourself I would encourage you to do so.

Thanks,

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Honestly, I really don't know where to turn for guidance on this subject. It's not exactly something I can turn to my parents or friends for advice on whether or not I'm psychic. It's just I feel there's something more than just coincidences in the things I feel or sense. Anyways, I really do appreciate your patience with me and all my questions. I understand you are a busy person, maybe there's someone you can suggest I talk to or maybe guide me? As I said before, I don't think anyone in my family is psychic. Can that kind of power be past down or is it something you just develop?

I'm thinking of going back to the Whaley House soon again. Somehow I was really drawn to that bedroom downstairs. In a weird way, I was feeling sick. It was sort of like I was cramping for that time of the month (sorry, I know that sounds gross) and I felt kind of hot, like a fever. What do you think?

Thanks again,
Cat

Hi Cat,

I do believe that psychic ability must be nurtured. We are all born with a Sixth Sense or gut feel or have hunches. The best place to start is to educate yourself on the subject. There are many good books, tapes, etc. I personally recommend Wayne Dyer for the spirtual side of things and John Edward has some good tools for people who want to develop their abilities.
