Hi Bonnie, will you be able to tell what else has the Whaley family told you besides them not liking the way the house is now? Just curious. Thanks

Hi Elaine,

This is a bigger issue than just not liking the choice of wallpaper. Thomas Whaley has asked me to locate his personal journals. They are part of a group of documents known as the Whaley Papers. I have already gone through the proper channels at the County to locate these documents. They appear to be missing since the change of caretaker in 2000/2001. These papers were used by the original group that saved the house and made it a museum to insure historical accuracy. Since there are no pictures of the interior of the house at the time(s) the Whaley's lived there it would be next to impossible to do this without these papers.

It is interesting to me that Thomas Whaley is requesting this at a time when not only is his house going through major changes but also the rest of Old Town. I wrote to Delaware North about the changes to what used to be Bazaar Del Mundo. Delaware North is in the restaurant business. The rest of the changes according to them are being mandated by the County Parks and Recreation Department.

Thomas Whaley is requesting changes be made in our time to correct history. He also claims that this will affect our future. For those that hold the belief that everything affects everything else, this make sense.

Thomas Whaley is not a talkative person. He has given me some business to take care of and I really don't expect to hear anymore until this part of the task is done.

Thanks for the post!

Hi Bonnie, Thanks for the info about the whaley's. So do you think the image on the diningroom wall is real? I would like to hear your part of it if you don't mind. Can you also tell me if the Whaley's can see who is coming and going from their house now? Sorry so many questions. I'm just so curious. Thanks for your time.

Hi Elaine,

The best I can tell it was a former nightime docent that used to point this out to people taking the tour. In the light of day the wall had been patched in that particular spot and it was very uneven. This could have been a trick of the light. This wall now has wallpaper with metallic gold crosses. If it was real you will never be able to see it again. The flash from your camera against the wallpaper will cause all kinds of explainable orbs in your picture.

Thomas and Anna Whaley do seem to be aware of things going on around them.

Thanks,

So let me see if I have this straight...

The County of San Diego was in possession of the "Whaley Papers." When the house changed caretakers, they suddenly can't be found?

Say someone wanted to write a professional, historical book about the house... how could they do so without seeing the authentic historical documents?

Has SOHO been approached about where these papers are?

A. Correct sort of...The documents were stored at the Whaley House. The County knew they existed there but they were never recorded by the County.

Q. Say someone wanted to write a professional, historical book about the house... how could they do so without seeing the authentic historical documents?
A. You would have to go to newspaper accounts or the writings of other people of the day. The San Diego Union did exist back then. This of course would not give fine details only what was considered newsworthy. Not an easy process if you do not have exact dates for reference.

Q. Has SOHO been approached about where these papers are?

A. Yes

Hi Bonnie, I'm also so curious to know what is making visitors go back to The Whaley House so may times? Like myself, I have been back to The House 5 times and I still want to keep going back. So what do you think it is? To me, The Whaley House is very mysterious isn't it?

Hi Elaine,

I don't really know the answer to your question but I do agree that it draws some people. I went to Old Town on Sunday. I sat outside the Whaley House for a short time. It just feels sad to me. I was horrified by the shape of the gardens. I hope this is a temporary condition. A lot of the beautiful old plants have been removed and there is just bare earth there. The rose garden also looks very bare. The herbs that were planted out front are also gone and a tall grass looking stuff is there instead.

Profoundly sad!

Hi Bonnie, I did ask a docent if the teather ws the Whaley's masterbedroom before and the docent said it was not. I wonder why she said that it was not. I do remember seeing it in pictures. Thanks

Hi Elaine,

There seems to have been some turnover at the house. Perhaps the docent was new. Technically the backstage of the theatre was the master bedroom. The room where the chairs are was a sitting room/bedroom. It seems the history is getting lost. The theatre was only there originally for a couple of weeks. Mr. Tanner of the Tanner Troup died shortly after arriving here and is buried in El Campo Santo.

Hi Bonnie, did you see anything while you were outside the Whaley House?

Hi Elaine,

I saw the little girl spirit following behind a Dad with 2 little girls that were entering the house. The girl spirit followed one of the girls from the big tree out front and on to the front porch. Perhaps she felt like she was being followed because she refused to go into the house and returned to Mom who was waiting outside.

I had a real case of Deja Vu at the Seeley Stables. I had not been there before at least in this lifetime. It seemed incredibly familiar.

Wow, I think that's so cool that you get to see those things. I have been to The Whaley House 5 times and still have not seen a thing. Although at time, I do feel sick in the house.

Hi Bonnie, I was wondering if you know what happened to Robin that she is not working at The Whaley House anymore? It seems like nobody wants to talk about it. Thanks

Hi Elaine,

I have a theory but no proof. It is a great loss for all of us. Robin really seemed to care about the Whaley's and she was very knowledgable. June Reading was her hero and she visited the house when she was a kid. So I know for her taking care of the house was more than just a job. She did used to read this board. If she still does she is welcome to post a message. I know many people knew and liked Robin and want to know she is OK.

Hi Elaine,

I have not heard about this particular sighting. It is possible. Many people that are not Whaley's have lived in the Whaley House, or gone to school there. It was quite the society place as well.

Has anyone else heard about this sighting?

Thanks,

Hi Bonnie, I'm not sure if you read the whaley house message board , but there was someone that captured the image of the lady in the green dress. I asked to see the pic and he e-mailed it the me, but I could not make the image out.

Hi Bonnie, is it true that The Whaley House is the most haunted in the U.S?

Hi Elaine,

That is a very subjective kind of thing. The Whaley House used to make the Travel Channel's Most Haunted. There have been newspaper articles that have made that claim. How would you measure to make that determination? There is even an Urban Legend that the house is certified haunted by the Dept of Commerce.

I can say that is it the only house I know of where the people currently haunting it thought it was haunted when they lived there.

Thomas Whaley used to claim that his house was haunted by Yankee Jim Robinson who was hung on the property before Thomas Whaley bought it and built his house. Thomas Whaley did attend Yankee Jim's hanging and has told me he feels very guilty for not stopping his death. Lillian Whaley wanted to die in the house because she claimed her parents were both there. Lillian was taken to a nursing home in 1953 and died a few month later. The funny thing is that no one reports seeing her spirit at the house.

We just don't know enough yet about what is going on there. I consider it a fascinating journey.

Hi Bonnie, Thank you for answering to all my questions. There;s more and I hope you don't mind. Did Mr and Mrs Whaley Pass away in The Whaley House? As for Lillian whaley, maybe she does not haunt the house cause she did not pass away in it. Could this be the reason? Another question is, The docents at the Whaley House has said that the top hat that is in the study belongs to Thomas Whaley. How did they get hold on his original hat? I also wish that everything in the house was the original like when The Whaleys lived there. That would be so cool if it was.

Hi Elaine,

Thomas Whaley did not die in the Whaley House in Old Town. He died at the 933 State Street address where he and Anna lived in New Town on 12/14/1890. Anna Whaley did died in the house on 02/24/1919.

I have no specific information regarding the hat. I do know that alot of the Whaley family possessions were sold to keep Lillian going. At the time that the Historic Shrine Foundation saved the house and made it a museum much of the furnishings were by donation. Whaley family members did donate Whaley possession to the "new" museum back in the 1960's. The Whaley Papers were also donated during this time. To this day only a very few items actually belonged to the Whaley's.

Thanks,
