I own an analog recorder as well as digital and the digital one I mostly use is a Olympus VN-6200PC and what I was wondering is what setting mode would work best for catching EVP'S with I have the settings as listed:

HQ High Quality mode 200 to 13,000 Hz
SP Standard recording mode 200 to 7,000 Hz
LP long term recording mode 200 to 3,000 Hz

Hi Mike,

If only we knew what channel I am on when I make contact. Wouldn't that be nice.

I did at one time ask a spirit person who seemed knowledgeable...If a person were using a device what frequency would they tune to in order to make contact? The answer came back as 20Hz. Later on I found out that researchers discounted 20Hz but did report that some people felt like they were being watched or followed when 20Hz frequencies were present at a location. Perhaps this should not be discounted.

I made contact with a spirit person who claimed to be Thomas Edison. He explained that there are variables involved here too. Weather being a factor, for instance. HAMM radio operators report the same thing with living people broadcasting. Signals travel better on dark and stormy nights, just like in the movies.

Perhaps someone else can provide a more technical opinion or method.

Thanks Bonnie and Irina for the help and I also asked one of my youtube friends who is in a paranormal investigation group and he mentioned to me to use HQ mode and set the mic sense to high.

Would white noise work along with trying the recorder aswell or does white noise work that way?

I also found this

There is a great deal of reasonable debate regarding EVP. Perhaps the most important point is that most EVP recordings are quite noisy, leaving quite a bit of room for perceptual error as a reasonable explanation. Research into consciousness shows that our senses often use internal shortcuts to avoid processing every sensory input we receive. This is why your sight and hearing can be fooled. And it is likely this often occurs in the EVP world.

When the sounds are clear, and no distortion is introduced (including reversing the recording) then you could say that the EVP is at least evidential, as you can reasonably remove perceptual error as a likely counterexplanation. Even better, such clear recordings should show some contextual relationship to what is going on in the environment at the time.

When the quality is high and some information is imparted, another explanation is required. It may well be that the reason for this unique type of EVP is actually personal PK. In other words, the person performing the EVP may be inducing a signal onto the recording themselves.

As to what is the best recording medium or device. While some who work in the EVP field seem to prefer analog recorders over digital, if you focus only on the best quality, digital should win hands down. This works well if you reject anything of questionable quality, especially recordings with high background noise.

As an example, last year I did a walkaround the Hotel Del Coronado for the purpose of making some notes to myself about room locations. I started at the room in the Hotel where the Beautiful Stranger spent her last days. I started my digital voice recorder (Olympus 4100) and before I could speak, a female voice said "Surprise!" very clearly and distinctly. There is no need to in any way play with the recording to hear this. It is clear as a bell, and no one else was around during the middle of the day on that floor. This is the quality I would suggest people seek.

Most important though, note there is no proof whatsoever that these voices are coming from the dead, or any other discarnates for that matter. That is a matter of faith and belief. There is unfortunately no scientific way to verify the actual source of these voices.

If in fact they are the result of modulation from living individuals, while they are intriguing they are not voices of spirits. The jury is out, but of course that shouldn't prevent anyone from enjoying them and seeking the highest possible quality of the phenomenon, whatever it may be in reality.

I've been doing a little research online this evening regarding this topic, and found a couple of things worth sharing. I am not an expert in this area, so I don't know how accurate this research is:

This video does not document the specific tools or methods used, but rather gives numerous examples of EVP recordings. Again, I have no idea how legitimate this information is or how these recordings were obtained.

This recording - both audio and visual - appears to be genuine and not scripted or acted in any way. The young woman or girl sounds British. The room she is about to enter is apparently quite cold, and she seems to have had some encounters or some kind of contact with a spirit in this room prior to this recording. She attempts to record EVP with a digital hand held recorder, I believe, and her camcorder. She becomes increasingly frightened, and is terrified at the end.

This video shows how to analyze EVP recordings using audio editing software. I found this one particularly interesting as the viewer gets to see how this is done, as it's being done. I like the analytical approach used in terms of slowing down and amplifying sounds, while eliminating background noise.

Here is a website I found just prior to the one in which I found the above videos. It provides some sound bites of EVP recordings and some interesting background information and history to this topic.

http://www.csicop.org/specialarticles/show/electronic_voice_phenomena_voices_of_the_dead/

Aside from what I have posted here, I don't have any personal experiences to share in which I'm confident or sure of what I may have captured. I did attempt to record any voices 'out there' using my Sony tape recorder (not a digital recorder but just the plain old fashioned standard kind using traditional magnetic cassette tape), and I used both the tape recorder's built-in mic and well as an external hand held mic (the model is SHURE C608). I spent about 20 minutes on September 4, 2010 at around 12:00AM to 12:20 AM asking a series of questions and allowing some time for a response. I preceded this experiment by talking to the person I had hoped to contact, and I explained to this person what I hoped to achieve.

Unfortunately, I used a segment of cassette tape that had my own voice recording on the other side, which I feel may have 'contaminated' any possible audio I may have picked up. I did hear some faint voice far in the background, but there is a tremendous amount of noise (is it called 'white noise'?) that interferes with my ability to really hear any response. I will try the experiment again, using a fresh tape that has never been recorded on, and see what happens. I may also try listening to playback using head phones, as has been suggested on the website featuring the videos I linked here.

Warmly,
Carmen
